Contribution of radar absorbing materials to RCS

The stealth shape contributes 90% to the reduction of the radar cross-sectional area (RCS), while the radar absorbing material (RAM) only accounts for 10%. If the use of RAM can reduce the RCS of the aircraft by an order of magnitude, then the use of stealth shape can reduce the RCS by 3 to 4 orders of magnitude. However, in some target signal characteristics range, the role of RAM far exceeds the above-mentioned level. RAM is a composite material composed of matrix material and filler. The matrix usually chooses a material with a low dielectric constant loss component. This type of material has a relatively small relative dielectric constant and a negligible magnetic permeability.



When electromagnetic waves pass through the base material, the loss is small, which is the physical characteristic that needs to be considered when selecting the base material. Typical matrix materials are generally non-conductive polymers, including plastic, glass, resin, polyurethane, and rubber. Ceramics have high magnetic permeability and strong heat resistance, while foam and honeycomb structures contain a large amount of air and have a particularly low dielectric constant (ie, electrical energy storage capacity). RAM fillers are usually particles made of "lossy material" (that is, with a higher dielectric constant loss component), or particles covered with a "lossy material" coating. Carbon is a good "loss material" because the electrical loss is proportional to the electrical conductivity, and the electrical conductivity of carbon is between the metal and the insulator. The magnetic absorption layer needs to use a material with a normal dielectric constant but a large magnetic permeability (characterizing the magnetic energy storage capacity), generally carbonyl iron (pure powdered metal) or iron oxide (also called ferrite). These materials can be mixed into rubber or dispersed in the coating material, and ferrite is usually sintered into some kind of patch material.
