Most of the magnetic absorbers used in the absorbing coating materials are spherical particles. From theoretical analysis, the effective permeability of spherical particles at microwave frequencies is 3, and because of their high density, it is difficult to meet the harsh requirements of the equipment for the absorbing coating. Foreign countries began to study the use of magnetic fibers for the modification of absorbing materials in the mid-1980s. Studies have shown that metal whiskers have good absorbing properties, which can be made of Fe, N, CO and their alloys. For example, American G.E. Boyer et al. added iron fibers to the binder (volume content of 25%~35%) to prepare the absorbing coatings that have an absorption of more than 10dB in 5~16GHz. Recently, the company introduced a multilayer iron fiber absorbing coating that it designed and developed. This polycrystalline iron fiber is a base iron monofilament with a diameter of 1 to 51m. The company claims that this fiber uses a variety of absorbing mechanisms to lose microwave energy, so it can achieve high absorption in a wide frequency band, and the weight can be Reduce 40%~60%. It is said that the technology has been used in missiles and reentry vehicles in service with the French National Strategic Defense Forces.



Polycrystalline iron fiber has outstanding performance in the low frequency band of microwaves. Recently, there are reports that when the fiber content is only 10% (volume fraction), the absorption rate of the coating with a coating thickness of 3mm is greater than 7dB within 1~2GHz, and when the fiber content is increased to 20%, the absorption rate is measured as high as 50dB. Multi-grade iron fiber with a diameter of 0.26m and a length of about 6.5m is used in the absorbing coating developed by the US 3M Company. When the fiber content is 25% (mass fraction), the absorption rate of the coating is 10-30dB in 6-16GHz. It should be pointed out that various conductive fibers, such as copper fibers, carbon fibers, etc., are often added to the absorbing coating, and their main function is to exist as an electric dipole. Through the interaction with the electromagnetic field of human radiation, energy absorption and radiation are caused, which can "amplify" the function of the absorbent, reduce the thickness and weight of the coating, and broaden the absorption frequency band. However, studies have shown that: the effect of magnetic fibers in the coating is better than that of conductive fibers.
