Mechanism of electromagnetic shielding of shielding box

The shielding box is a metal body made of various shapes of conductive or magnetic materials, which limits the electromagnetic ability to a certain space, and is used to suppress radiation interference. So what mechanism should the electromagnetic shielding of the shielding box follow?

1. Electromagnetic field theory
Electromagnetic waves are reflected at the interface of different propagation media due to the sudden change of wave impedance. In addition, in the transmission medium, such as inside a metal material, electromagnetic waves will be attenuated. This kind of reflection and attenuation just illustrates the shielding mechanism of metal materials.

Second, the principle of electromagnetic induction

When the alternating electromagnetic field passes through the surface of the metal material, the metal material will form an eddy current due to the induced electromotive force. The magnetic field generated by this eddy current is exactly opposite to the original magnetic field, which cancels part of the original magnetic field and acts as a shield. In addition, because the metal material has a certain resistance, the eddy current generates heat inside the metal material, which consumes part of the ability of incident electromagnetic waves, and also plays a role of shielding.



3. Transmission line theory
In a lossy non-uniform transmission line, electromagnetic waves will be reflected because the impedance of the transmission line does not match the impedance of the electromagnetic wave. In addition, the transmission line is lossy, and the electromagnetic wave will be attenuated during the transmission process. This is very similar to the reflection and attenuation in the theoretical analysis of electromagnetic waves, but this method is much simpler than the analysis method of electromagnetic waves, and it is also the most used method in electromagnetic shielding analysis.
