Application technology of radar absorbing materials

Radar absorbing materials use the special electromagnetic characteristics of absorbing composite materials to convert incident electromagnetic wave energy into heat energy to be consumed, so as to reduce the intensity of radar echoes in certain key parts of the aircraft. It is one of the important stealth measures.

Stealth composite materials include coating absorbing materials, structural composite absorbing materials and active absorbing materials. The mechanism of the absorbing material is to cause the incident electromagnetic wave energy to oscillate at the molecular level and convert it into heat energy, effectively attenuating the intensity of the radar echo. According to different absorption mechanisms, it can be divided into three categories: absorption, resonance and attenuation.


Application technology of radar absorbing materials


1) Coating absorbing material
Coatable absorbing material is a kind of paint that absorbs radar waves that is applied to the surface of the body. The wave-absorbing coatings widely used in the 1980s are various ferrite wave-absorbing materials, such as hammer-pick ferrite for centimeter wave band, nickel-zinc ferrite for millimeter wave band, and hammer for widening band- Zinc ferrite. The f-1l7a, b-2, and f-22 stealth aircraft mainly use ferrite absorbing coatings. In 1987, the United States also developed a non-ferrite-based wave absorbing material, which is a polymer with double bonds composed of a variety of retinyl Schiff base salts. It has good wave absorbing properties and weighs only ferrite. The attenuation of radar waves can reach more than 80%. Another new type of "iron spherical" wave-absorbing coating developed in the United States is characterized by low price, easy coating, and high temperature resistance of 5000℃. In addition, coatings and semiconductor coatings containing radioactive isotopes are being developed abroad, which are characterized by wide absorption frequency bands, high reflection attenuation rate, and long service life, which can better meet the aerodynamic requirements of supersonic flight.

2) Structural type absorbing material

Structural wave absorbing material is a composite material that can be used as a load-bearing component and has excellent electromagnetic wave absorption performance. At present, there are roughly three types of absorbent dispersion type, laminate type and sandwich structure type developed abroad. The absorbent dispersion type is made of thermoplastic peek, pps and other resins spun into monofilament and multifilament, respectively, and carbon fiber, glass fiber and other special fibers are alternately mixed into yarn bundles in a certain proportion, and then woven into fabrics and made of similar resins to make composite materials (F-117's v-shaped vertical tail, f-22's fuselage and wing skins use this absorbing material). The laminate type is a composite material made into a multilayer structure, the outermost layer is a wave-transmitting material, the middle layer is an electromagnetic loss layer, and the innermost layer is composed of a material with the performance of reflecting radar waves. The sandwich structure type is a composite material made of composite materials with good wave permeability and high strength as the panel, honeycomb structure, corrugated structure or cone structure as the core, and then filled with graphite, magnetic powder, and foam absorbing materials. Because the sandwich structure composite material has light weight, high specific stiffness and specific strength, and is easy to be made into a complex curved structure, this type of composite material has been widely used in stealth aircraft. For example, a-12, f-19, b-lb, b-2, yf-23 and other aircraft use this type of material to varying degrees. Among them, the type of material used on b-lb aircraft actually accounts for the entire structural material. 30%.
